Cell Communication

 


There are two kinds of communication in the world of living cells. Communication between cells is called intercellular signaling, and communication within a cell is called intracellular signaling. An easy way to remember the distinction is by understanding that the prefix inter- means “between” (an interstate highway crosses between states) and intra- means “inside” (an IV means intravenous or “inside the vein”).

Chemical signals are released by a signaling cell and received by a target cell. Target cells have proteins called receptors, which bind to signaling molecules and cause a response. Signaling molecules that bind to receptors are called ligands. Ligands and receptors are specific for each other; a receptor will typically bind only to its specific ligand. However, there are different types of signaling.

There are four categories of chemical signaling found in multicellular organisms: autocrine signaling, paracrine signaling, endocrine signaling, and direct signaling across gap junctions. The main difference between the different categories of signaling is the distance that the signal travels to reach the target cell.

Autocrine means self signaling spiritually this is when God let's us feel pain and/or guilt bith should motivate us to STOP what we are doing. Paracrine is signalling to nearby cells. What types of signals are your friends sending you are they building your faith or leading you in wrong directions. The third type is endocrine which uses hormones to send the message,

I've had alot of experience with hormones lately and they are powerful and when they are out of balance so are you. The other interesting thing about endocrine signaling is in contrast to the other three this system of control is slower because the signals must pass through the blood. Some messages are like that though we don't get them unless their covered in His blood.

The final type of cell communication is direct across a gap. Have you ever heard God directly or seen His work on your behalf? If you start looking for it and listening for His voice you'll see it. The healing your friend prayed for, the money that comes in just before the bill is due, the divine appointment with someone who changes your life, the parking space in the crowded lot, the dream that wakes you at 3 am. He wants to communicate His love for us directly but we have to have our receptors tuned to receive Him

Power of the Blood

 I am of the firm opinion that just as humanity reflects our Creator, the creation also has characteristics that can inform us about our Creator. Lately I've been thinking about blood. It is essential to our spiritual and physical lives. The very first time God used it to cover our sin was when He slaughtered an innocent animal to cover the nakedness of Adam and Eve. In Exodus 24:1-8 the first covenant between God and Israel was signified by blood. In the new covenant, it is Jesus's blood on the cross that supplies a new sacrifice on our behalf what the book of Hebrews calls a more perfect offering. The primary function of blood in the body is to deliver oxygen and nutrients to, and remove wastes from, the body's cells; but that is only the beginning. The specific functions of blood also include defense, and maintenance of homeostasis, such as distributing heat where it is needed. As someone who is convinced that I have worlds to learn about love I thought I would take the lessons of the hydrologic cycle a little further and consider photosynthesis.   Photosynthesis is, at its core, an  energy conversion process . Input Energy:  Light energy (photons) from the sun. Output Energy:  Chemical potential energy stored in the covalent bonds of organic molecules, primarily glucose (C₆H₁₂O₆). This transformation occurs when organisms produce  carbon compounds  (like glucose) using light as the energy source. The key words here being conversion and transformation.
